Sisterhood
The Sisterhood is an affiliate organization of Temple Israel, and a
member of the Women of Reform Judaism. Membership is open to all
women in the Temple Israel Family.
The Sisterhood holds monthly
meetings that are open to all members of the congregation.
We are proud to support our congregation and the community at-large.
The following is a brief overview of our programming:
For the Congregation:
We support the Temple and the World Union for Progressive Judaism. We
sell YES fund Uniongrams which raises funds for the Women of Reform
Judasim. We provide flowers for the Bima each Sabbath and holiday and
build an exquisite Sukkah each festival of Sukkot. We present
candlesticks to each Bat Mitzvah and a Kiddush cup to each Bar
Mitzvah. We present a welcome package of wine and challah to each new
member of the congregation for the High Holy Days. We work closely
with all Temple committees, as well as our Nursery School and
Religious Schools.
For Education:
We sponsor regular study groups with Rabbi Lewis. We hold open
meetings with noted speakers on topics of Jewish and world interest.
We maintain the Sisterhood Library and hold several Book Reviews each
year as well as an Annual Book and Author Event - free and open to the
public. We also sponsor a scholarship program for the Temple Israel
Religious School.
For the Community:
We sponsor a clothing drive for the Urban Women's Retreat. We work
with the Neighborhood Coalition for the Homeless and Interfaith
Neighbors. We support our Armed Forces with annual contributions. We
sponsor the Passover and Emergency Appeal for the needy.
The Sisterhood plays an integral role in Temple life. We offer an opportunity to
become involved in the Temple in a truly meaningful way. We look forward to your
interest in our organization.
