Temple Israel of the City of New York supports many charitable endeavors. A contribution to Temple Israel highlights your appreciation of our commitment to our Jewish heritage, an appreciation of our history, and an expression of thanks to the Temple and its congregants. Each individual act of tzedakah expresses a sacred and enduring Jewish value by connecting us with ourselves, one another, and the world beyond our Temple door. These acts are deepened by the incredible individuals in our congregation that bind us to each other.

Tempe Israel provides many services to its congregants that require supplemental operating funds, such as inspirational worship led by our clergy, and programs for tots, children, teens, and adults. Through the support and generosity of caring members and associates of our congregation, everything we have accomplished will remain, and our hopes and plans for the future will be realized.

For more information on making a donation to Temple Israel, please contact Eugenia Edwards at 646-292-9466.

Annual Appeal | Donate
The Annual Appeal is our most significant Temple-wide development effort. As you may know, many revenue sources – in addition to Temple membership – help support our warm and inclusive synagogue committed to learning, justice, and good deeds.

We are proud of our inspiring worship services and programs – offered twelve months a year – for members and neighbors. A few highlights include:

  • We have almost 300 students in our Religious School. They participate in our popular, acclaimed, cutting-edge distance learning program for Grades 4-6 and The Academy, and elective program for Grades 7-12.
  • The Purim Carnival and Mitzvah Day.
  • Collaborations with Hebrew Union College, AIPAC, AJWS, 92nd Street Y, Shalom Hartman Institute, and Skirball Center.

The Annual Appeal enables us to achieve the vision we share for our sacred community. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed to the 2016-17 Annual Appeal!

General Contributions | Donate
General contributions are for general programming use. Your contribution helps to offset ongoing operation costs at Temple Israel.

Yahrzeit Fund | Donate
Your contribution honors a loved one upon the anniversary of his or her death.

Discretionary Funds | Donate
Members of our Temple regularly make contributions to the Rabbis' and Cantors' Discretionary Funds. Each could just as well be called a Tzedakah Fund or a Good Works Fund. Most often these donations are in honor of a family simcha – a wedding, a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, a baby naming or bris, or a special life cycle moment – or in memory of a loved one. As well, gifts are often an expression of appreciation to the particular Rabbi, or Cantor, to further the Temple's goals. Such gifts are only used for charitable causes and to support the goals of our congregation.

  • Rabbi David J. Gelfand
  • Cantor Irena Altshul
  • Rabbi Melissa Buyer-Witman
  • Rabbi Jim Stoloff
  • Robert French, Executive Director

Book of Remembrance | Donate
We invite you to honor the memory of your loved ones by listing their names in our annual Book of Remembrance. The Book of Remembrance also includes The Perpetual Yahrzeit List, which memorializes those whose names are consecrated on Memorial Plaques, Seats, Windows, and our congregation's ritual items. Additionally, there are readings for comfort throughout the year and Yizkor prayers. We distribute the Book of Remembrance at our Yizkor Memorial Service on Yom Kippur afternoon. We encourage all to engage in this act of thoughtful, generous tzedakah as a sacred way to honor loved ones, so their goodness will bless the lives of others.

NYConnect Fund | Donate
NYConnect is Temple Israel's 20s & 30s young professionals networking group. We gather once a month for informal events, including Shabbat dinners, holiday celebrations, and social mixers throughout the city.

Passover Appeal | Donate
Your donation will enable us to collaborate with Bluecard and welcome Holocaust survivors to our Congregational Seder. Contributions also support the efforts of the New York Board of Rabbis and The Jewish Welfare Board who deliver traditional food to thousands in our community, as well as those serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Through this and our social action programs, we try to act responsibly remembering those who are not free from hunger and those who support our nation and are far from their families at Passover.

Your thoughtful response to this appeal will make this mitzvah possible, so that "All who are hungry may come and eat." (Passover haggadah)

PJ Library | Donate
PJ Library is a nonprofit organization funded by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation in partnership with Temple Israel. Become a member of the PJ Library community and receive a free Jewish children's book, CD, or DVD each month. PJ Library hosts 4 events annually for families with PJ Library memberships, but the events are always open to interested families and friends. Children are thrilled to get a treat in the mail each month and can begin building their personal library, while parents have an excellent resource to help further their child's Jewish education and foster a strong sense of community and identity for them.

ECLC Scholarship Fund | Donate
Temple Israel Early Childhood Learning Center is committed to making our program as accessible as possible to all families. Tuition subsidies are need-based and our demand far surpasses our ability to provide them. Your support is critical to our ensuring that every young child has the opportunity to participate in their Jewish educational journey.

Religious School Scholarship Fund | Donate
The Religious School Scholarship Fund serves to ensure that no student is denied a Jewish education because of financial need. By making a donation you are playing a vital role in shaping our children's lives and the future of the Jewish People. Please help us in our sincere desire to include everyone who has an interest in Jewish learning and living.

Social Action Fund | Donate
The founders of Temple Israel formed this Congregation based on a mission that included strengthening the Jewish community and assisting those in need in the community at large. We continue to uphold this mission as a Temple Family, by supporting programs, projects, and services which adhere to this important mission.

Summer Programming Fund | Donate
Temple Israel offers summer programming in the Hamptons, including a weekend with our summer scholar-in-residence.

Women's Leadership Council Fund | Donate
The Women's Leadership Council of Temple Israel reaches out spiritually and intellectually to embrace the virtues of Sisterhood while seeking to benefit its members and the Temple community.

Charles Alan Zion Memorial Fund | Donate
This Fund honors the life of Charles Alan Zion, son of Jane & Rabbi Martin Zion.
