ourboysTemple Israel of the City of New York Mourns the Tragic Death of the Three Kidnapped Teenagers in Israel

"A Voice Says: Cry Out! And I Say: What Shall I Cry?" (Isaiah 40:6)

As the news unfolds today from Israel, our hearts are heavy with the discovery of the bodies found outside Hebron of the kidnapped, murdered students, Gilad Shaar, 16, Naftali Frenkel 16, and Eyal Yifrach, 19. After 18 long days and nights, anger and grief, disappointment and hopelessness overwhelm us and all the more so their families, all who knew and loved them, and all of the citizens of Israel, along with our Jewish brothers and sisters everywhere. These were not soldiers, but Jewish students who loved Israel, desired to study Torah and had their entire lives yet before them. Students, the guardians of civilization, representing hope and possibilities for tomorrow, were murdered, thereby diminishing humanity. Surely, God cries.

We, their extended family here at Temple Israel in NYC join with people of goodwill around the world in mourning this tragic and traumatic loss. We hope that perpetrators of this horrendous act will be brought to swift justice amidst the tumult and violence in all corners of the Middle East. Let us remain committed to support Israel, so that the terrorists dreams may be denied, and these youngsters not have died in vain.

We join all of Israel and those who seek peace within her borders and with her neighbors, in offering prayers of comfort to the grieving families of Gilad, Naftali and Eyal. May their families know no more sorrow.

May the Source of strength bring comfort to the mourners in Zion and Jerusalem as we express our solidarity with these families and with the people of Israel now in mourning enduring the unimaginable.

The prophet Isaiah reminds us that we are called upon to bring comfort:

"Comfort My people, comfort them." (Isaiah 40:1)

May the Source of strength bring comfort to the mourners in Zion and Jerusalem as we express our eternal solidarity with these families and with the people of Israel now in mourning , enduring the unimaginable. Together let us find the courage to yet pray and work for peace.
